Saturday’s 92-79 win over the Durham Wildcats saw the début of new signing and former Leicester Rider, Yorick Williams to the club.
Williams played 13 minutes in the win, notching 5 points and 3 assists as he helped his new team secure their first win of the new year.
“Yorick Williams is a guy that I’m very familiar with,” revealed Paternostro. “He’s a guy who, during my first year in England, was a team-mate of mine in Birmingham. We’ve known each other for a long time and we also played together on the Riders during 2006-2007.”
The familiarity between coach and player was part of the reason Williams joined the Leicester club and although the signing happened quickly, Rob Paternostro says the Manchester born player has been practising with the club since September:
“Yorick has been practising with us for three months and he’s very familiar with our personnel and what we do as a team (so) putting him out on the floor against Durham, it wasn’t like having a new player because he’s already been with us.”
“With John (Griffin) deciding to go back to the States, he isn’t playing basketball at the moment and isn’t sure where his future is, there was an opportunity for Yorrick to come in.”
Long time Riders fans and BBL followers will know all about Mr Williams for his passionate play during a career that has seen him give his all at the Milton Keynes Lions, Birmingham Bullets, Brighton Bears and Essex Leopards to name only a few. But for those unsure how he will fit with a squad already seemingly well established, Paternostro will tell you:
“I’ve got a lot of respect for his game. One of the things that goes unnoticed because he’s been a flashy player over the years, a scorer, an athletic player, one of the things that goes unnoticed is that he’s a very intelligent basketball player both on offense and defence. He can give us some help off the bench with some important minutes.”
