Leicester Riders have moved to add Icelandic international’s Sara Hinriksdóttir out of Canisius College to the WBBL roster alongside studying at Loughborough’s School of Business and Economics.
Hinriksdóttir joins following a positive senior year for the Canisius Griffs, with season highs of 24 points and 17 rebounds whilst averaging 12.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per game through her four years.
As a senior Hinriksdóttir averaged 34 minutes per game starting 27 of 30 games for the Griffs, grabbing 8.1 rebounds per game to go along with 12.9 points per game to be named All-MAAC Second Team, her third All-Team hour in four years. The performances earn MAAC Player of the Week honours twice in the season.
The young forward also led the MAAC in double-doubles, totalling eight across the season including a huge 17 rebound display against Bowling Green in December of last year.
“I’m really excited for the season to start,” commented Hinriksdóttir. “It will be fun to see where we stand with the other teams.”
“I’m looking forward to see how far we can go, personally I really do believe we can do many good things this year with the group of people we have.
Hinriksdóttir will be combining her playing in the WBBL with studying at Loughborough University’s School of Business and Economics.
“Just living here in Loughborough has been amazing so far. The facilities are on a different level and I can’t wait for school to start. Getting this opportunity studying my masters and playing basketball at the same time is really a privilege and something I’m really thankful for, and an opportunity that I just couldn’t let go.”
Sara Hinriksdóttir will be in action with the team tomorrow as they take on the Oaklands Wolves as the season gets underway!
