The 2015/16 Women’s Elite Academy Basketball League (WEABL) Player of the Year Ruchae Walton will head to Portland State this September to continue her basketball across the pond alongside education.
Walton helped lead Charnwood College Riders to the WEABL Championship game two years in a row as well as attending multiple finals over her time at Charnwood.
We checked in with Ruchae to chat about her decision and what she is looking forward to the most.
How does it feel to finally have committed?
It feels incredible! Knowing that I have such a huge weight off of my shoulders, I couldn’t be any more excited!
What made you decide to commit to Portland State College?
Firstly they offer what I would like to major in so that was a huge positive. Then when I spoke to the coaches, they came across as such nice people that would definitely take care of me! Also I’ve only ever visited the east coast of America so with Portland being on the west, it adds that “adventure” element!
How did you find the recruiting process?
Extremely stressful as well as time consuming. With it all being complete now, I can honestly that the long Skype calls, the back and forth emailing, all the transcript drama – it was all worth it when you get “the feeling” about the right school.
What are you looking forward to most for next season?
Progressing towards my educational goal, meeting new people, the basketball and just the whole atmosphere; I think playing basketball in a country where the sport is so popular will be amazing.
How has your time at Charnwood been so far?
Charnwood has been such an outstanding and unique experience so for that I’d like to thank my coach, Krumesh Patel for pushing me beyond my limits and teammates for being such incredible people. Without them we never would have achieved all that we did. I have to give a shoutout to the Second Years Gang too! Now I would also like to thank Steve Vear for his work behind the scenes in helping me find my perfect fit, family friend, Jackson Gibbons for his continued support and finally, my family for believing in me, encouraging me throughout my development and doing all that was necessary to help me move forward.
How does the programme that Charnwood offer help you?
Charnwood has been fantastic. It has helped me grow as a person on and off the basketball court. This programme knows how to push your buttons to help you succeed. Even from the early mornings to the sand workouts, I wouldn’t change a thing.
What is your favourite memory of Charnwood so far?
To be honest, it has to be the entire journey. I’ve had so many high highs here and a few lows, along with many challenges. But at the end of the day, I came here to do what I have done: get a scholarship to America and have an opportunity to play college ball.
