The Riders kept their unbeaten run going over the weekend with convincing wins over the Oaklands Wolves and Caledonia Pride.
In the first game of the back-to-back, the Riders travelled to Oaklands for the WBBL Cup quarter final match-up and came out firing. Leicester would lead 26-10 after the first quarter and it was a lead they would never let up.
The Riders would hand a season debut to Kate Oliver in the game following her return to the side for the 2018/19 season and Oliver would prove to be too much to handle for the Wolves, finishing with a 25-point, 12-rebound, double-double, also contributing three blocked shots!
Leicester would take the win 83-65 and will now face either the Newcastle Eagles or Sevenoaks Suns in the semi-final of the competition.
In contrast to the cup quarter final, the Riders came out on Sunday against Caledonia Pride and needed a bit longer to start rolling. After the first, Leicester would find themselves behind by three on a buzzer-beater in the corner from Caledonia’s Pollyanna Storie.
Coming out after the break, the Riders would put together an 11-0 scoring run and from that point onwards, Caledonia wouldn’t regain the lead.
Recent Oregon Ducks’ recruit, Holly Winterburn would lead the way in the game with 29 points, 7 assists and 7 steals for the Riders as the home side would run out winners by a dominant 25-point differential. Riders 93 Pride 68.
Riders Head Coach, Jesper Sundberg commented on the weekend’s action; “I’m really happy with the wins, especially as it’s never easy to start over after a national team window. And advancing in the cup is always big. All credit to the players hard work and the rest of my staff for great preparation for the weekend.”
