The University of Rhode Island are to come to the UK to face the BBL League Champions Leicester Riders as part of the pre-season for the 2017-18 campaign.
Known as the Rams, Rhode Island play in NCAA Division I and the Atlantic 10 Conference which will give their BBL opponents a tough test in these exciting invitational games.
The Americans will step out in the capital against the London Lions on Thursday 10 August at the London City University and will then appear the day after on 11 August at the Leicester Arena.
Leicester Riders Chairman Kevin Routledge stated: “We are delighted to be hosting a prestigious US college team like Rhode Island at our new Leicester Arena.
“It will give our fans the opportunity to see US college basketball, and all that means in terms of young talent and athleticism, and it will be a great way to start the build up to our own pre-season, and the new BBL season.
“With this Rhode Island series, and the recently announced Matchroom British All Stars Event at the O2 arena about a month later, next season in the BBL promises to the most exciting ever.”
University of Rhode Island coach Danny Hurley is looking forward to the match-ups and commented: “We are excited to embark on our summer basketball tour, beginning with a visit to London in August.
“We will take on two very talented teams – the London Lions and Leicester Riders who are two of the top teams in the British Basketball League.
“The cultural and athletic experiences our team will enjoy during our stay in England will provide our student-athletes with a lifetime of memories and invaluable playing experience on the court.”
