Leicester Riders booked themselves a home quarter-final with a thumping victory over Glasgow Rocks, ending the Scots chances of reaching the last eight of the BBL Cup.
Riders blasted Glasgow 93-58, their second biggest win ever against the Rocks, to record their second consecutive thirty-point home victory.
Rocks led only once at 2-0, for about ten seconds, and coach Vincent Lavandier called an unusually early time-out after only 74 seconds with the score only 8-4. Perhaps he could see what was about to happen as Jamell Anderson, Jesse Chuku and Kyron Cartwright combined to push Riders 18-4 in front inside four minutes.
Arguably Glasgow’s best spell of the game came late in the first quarter when a couple of Gareth Murray three-pointers helped trim the deficit to four points, but it was short-lived. Darien Nelson-Henry was too strong inside, whilst Chuku continued to shoot the ball extremely well, as did Cartwright who was totally running the game.
Cartwright’s explosive speed ripped through the defence time and again and midway through the second period Leicester were 42-23 clear. With Anderson having one of his best offensive nights of the season, the result looked all but secured at the interval with Riders twenty points ahead.
Not that Riders were about to let up, in the second half Joe Scott, Andy Thomson and Anderson all hit three-pointers in quick succession as the lead closed in on thirty points.
It peaked at 37 when Thomson and Scott again connected from behind the arc and the final few minutes saw Coach Paternostro able to field a side made up of mainly youngsters from Riders’ Loughborough University and Charnwood College teams.
Six players scored double figures, led by Anderson who had 20 points and Cartwright who was sensational for his 17 points and eight assists.
Riders: Anderson 20, Cartwright 17, Nelson-Henry 12, Chuku 11, Dieterich 10, Thomson 10, Scott 9, Lascelles 4, Roberts, Sagna, Jimenez, Durand.
Rocks: Fraser 16, Djo Ebala 14, Pepper 7, Rinkunas 7, Murray 6, Pryor 4, Malcolm 2, Geddes 2, Bunyan, Allan.
