The Riders further extended their winning run to eight league games and nine in all competitions with a huge 40-point victory over the travelling Newcastle Eagles.
Newcastle started the scoring at Loughborough University after Kara Bonenberger was able to get her jump shot to drop. That 2-0 lead though was Newcastle’s last lead of the game as Leicester followed that with an 8-0 run early in the first.
The Eagles were able to bring the game to within one possession at 10-8 but once again, the Riders went on a run to give themselves a clear gap. This time the Riders’ run would be 16-2 with Holly Winterburn and Jen Ashton providing the spark as they’d head in after one with a clear 16-point advantage.
And the second period looked to be much of the same as the Riders built their lead up to 24. But with three minutes left to play of the second quarter, the home side wouldn’t add another point. Instead, this time it was the Eagles’ turn to go on a run as they used those final few minutes to cut the deficit from 24 to 14.
The long runs would stop at the start of the second half as the two side exchanged baskets frequently. Dee Hayward was able to open the scoring with a three-point shot before Holly Winterburn added two herself, alongside a layup. The Riders lead though was only extended by five despite the great early shooting as Newcastle were able to get their offence going too.
Both teams continued to score but by the end of the period it was enough to give the Riders a comfortable cushion headed into the final ten minutes, a 19-point advantage intact.
With ten minutes to play, and 19 points to overcome where you might have expected Newcastle to push to cut it, it just wasn’t possible. The Riders were able to outscore the travelling side by 21 points in the final quarter alone and completely blow the game up giving themselves a huge 40-point win.
The Riders move up to second place in the WBBL Championship table following the win. Holly Winterburn extended her great run of form with 25 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals whilst Jen Ashton added 12 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals of her own.
Claire Paxton though was a problem alongside her teammates all game long as she added a season-high in both points and rebounds with 23 and 16 respectively.
Score at the final buzzer, Leicester Riders 97 Newcastle Eagles 57.
