Leicester Riders Women moved to the top of the WBBL Championship table this weekend with victory over Cardiff Met Archers.
Leicester Riders have gone top of the WBBL Championship after a comprehensive 88-41 defeat of Cardiff Met Archers at Leicester Arena, their biggest ever winning margin against this opposition. Riders reach the summit courtesy of their East Midlands rivals, Nottingham Wildcats, losing on Saturday afternoon.
Riders are unbeaten against Archers in more than two years, and never looked like losing this one after opening with the first 14 points in an irrepressible five minute spell, Holly Winterburn and Alex Smith sharing 10 of those points as the league’s second best defence kept their visitors scoreless.
All nine Riders were on the scoreboard by halftime, and they did further damage from beyond the arc in the second stanza, hitting six three-pointers including a trio for Harriet Swindells and two for Dee Hayward. Riders led 46-18 at the break.
Archers edged the third quarter, but Riders opened the fourth with the first fifteen points – seven scored by Vitalija Vasciunaite, who led the scoring with 18 points – as another Swindells trey made the score 77-36.
And Archers were scoreless for another five minutes as Riders went on to win the fourth by 26-5. Five Riders finished in double-figure scoring, with Jamila Thompson posting a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
