About the Eagles
The Eagles are the most successful Club in BBL history, having won 25 trophies. This includes winning the BBL Cup six times. But they have been trophy-less the last two seasons, their last piece of silverware coming in the 2016-17 season, when they won the BBL Cup.
It has been an off-season of seismic change with player coach Fab Flournoy, MBE off to join the NBA Champions, Toronto Raptors, as an assistant coach, after an 18 year career with the Eagles, a period which delivered most of the their silverware.
But there is continuity through owner Paul Blake and Newcastle moved into their new purpose-built sports arena in early January, after a decade based at Northumbria University. Ian MacLeod has taken over Flournoy’s big shoes.
Their BBL experience is exemplified by veteran English centre Darius Defoe, and naturalised guard Andrew Lasker, along with the Canadian Kai Williams and young guards Eddie Matthews and Themba Yabantu.
Back again also is American point guard and two-time league MVP Rahmon Fletcher.
New signings include small forward Mike Morsell, guard Nick Schlitzer, and centre Sade Aded Hussein. American Morsell is a 6 foot 5 inch wing who played in Finland last year. Aded Hussein is French, played in Pro B last season, and pulled down 17 rebounds last game against Glasgow. Schlitzer previously played at Surrey, and in Georgia, Iceland and Sweden.
Season So Far – Eagles
The Eagles have won 2 of their opening three games this season, beating Cheshire and Glasgow, before the Rocks extracted revenge in Newcastle last weekend in overtime.
Season So Far – Riders
The Riders currently sit top of the BBL Cup North Pool opening with three victories, beating Sheffield, Cheshire and most recently Manchester in a 96-57 road win.
Players to Watch
Veteran guard Drew Lasker is unsung, and comes off the bench, but last weekend he top scored for the Eagles with 15 points, and added 6 rebounds and 5 assists, in an all action display in the overtime home loss to Glasgow.
Riders Jamell Anderson is playing the best basketball of his career, according to his coach Rob Paternostro, and top scored with 21 points, including 4 of 8 three pointers, in the win over Manchester last Sunday.
