Leicester Riders play their first pre-season game at the Morningside Arena (7:30pm) on Friday 30th September against Swedish KFUM Nassjo Basket who finished sixth in the Swedish top flight last season.
It will be the first chance for Riders fans to catch a glimpse of the new look Riders in action, however newly announced signing Jalen Lindsey is not expected to be in the UK before the game.
There will however be a first match in a Riders shirt for American point guard Kyron Cartwright and fellow Los Angeles native shooting guard Namon Wright, and for Italian American guard/ forward Joe Scott.
Also making his debut for the Riders is British forward Jesse Chuku who is retuning to play his basketball in his home country for the first time in 9 years.
Nassjo are one of the oldest clubs in Sweden having started in the early 1950s, and when the league in Sweden commenced in 1958, Nässjö men’s team was one of the teams in the highest division.
The Swedes will include former Loughborough Rider Lucien Christofis in his first professional game.
Nassjo has returning American forward Franklyn Williams Jr, who averaged 13.2 points and 3.4 rebounds a game last season, and centre Dartaye Ruffin, who averaged 15.5 points and 7.1 rebounds a game for the Swedes last season.
Swedish point guard Felix Terins will also be a handful for Riders, as he averaged 12.6 points, 3.2 assists and 2.9 rebounds per game last season for Nassjo.
For Riders Head Coach Rob Paternostro a run-out against European competition is just what is required at this stage of the pre-season,
“All our guys are looking to get a game under their belts after a few weeks of hard training, and conditioning. Especially it will be the first time for many of them to experience the arena in a game day setting, so that will be fun for them.”
“We are still very much in the early days of our development as a team, which is understandable with the changes made to the squad. It is a good chance as well for our fans to see and meet the players.
“We don’t know a huge amount about Nassjo but they have always been a solid team, with a mix of Swedish and overseas talent, and it will be good to see Lucien Christofis back.”
