Leicester Riders will take on the Plymouth Raiders this Saturday as a busy run of games continues for the team in the BBL Championship.
Riders guard Eric Robertson took time out with our Ally Darlow to share his thoughts on the BBL Championship, the Riders Trophy victory and his MVP performance in the BUCS Championship with Loughborough University.
It’s been less than 2 weeks since you beat Plymouth in the BBL Trophy final. Do you think that’ll be in their minds this time around?
Yeah definitely, it’ll be in their minds because that was the last time they played us and we played really well. They didn’t make many shots and they’ll be thinking that they have an opportunity to beat us this time. So I’m sure they’ll be fired up and ready to go.
You’ve faced Plymouth twice this season and won both, will you be taking anything from those wins into today’s game?
Yeah, we’ll be looking at the films of those games and looking at the things that were good that helped us win those games. But we’ll also look at things that we can improve on we’ll try to minimise those mistakes that we made the last 2 times that we played them and we’ll try to maximise the things that we did that went well.
You secured your 1st piece of BBL Silverware in the BBL Trophy final and you were also named as MVP in the BUCS Final on Wednesday. You must be pleased with your performances?
Yeah definitely, individually I think I played well in the Trophy Final and I helped our team to get the win and I was glad to be a part of the BUCS team and to help them win a BUCS Championship.
April is a pretty hectic month for you with 8 games in 23 days ahead of BBL Playoff action. Are you looking forward to the busy period?
“Yes I am, this is what we prepare for all pre-season. We’re were ready to get to the last part of the season where you either make your season or break your season. We really want to win the league and then obviously in the playoffs we want to do really well.
You’ve won the Trophy, you’re top of the league and you’ve guaranteed a play-off place. Is there belief that you can go on to win the treble this season?
That’s definitely the goal, at the start of the season our goal was to win all 4 but we were knocked out of the BBL Cup early, then we went on to win the Trophy so now there’s two things that we’re shooting for. Right now we’re mainly focused on winning the league, so that’s putting the focus on every individual game that we can, yeah that’s our goal to win the league and hopefully win the Play-offs.
Riders bounced back well with a win over the Rocks after a disappointing loss against Worcester Wolves. Are you looking to get some momentum going now?
Yeah of course, although it’s never good to lose, sometimes when you do lose you can get some good out of it and it helps bring you back down to earth and remind you that if you don’t come ready to compete every game then you can lose. I think in a way it was good to lose that game now early than later so we can get the ball back rolling and get our streak going.
Finally, any messages for the fans?
I’m thankful for the fans and their support. I’m thankful for them coming to our games and cheering loud and even travelling to Glasgow for the Trophy. I’m just thankful for their support and I hope that they keep coming to our games and keep showing us the love that they’ve shown us.
You can watch Eric and the rest of the Riders on April 1st at Leicester Sports Arena.
