Riders Head Coach, Rob Paternostro, has praised the hard work his players showed in preparation for their second leg semi-final victory over the Plymouth Raiders on Saturday.
Having taken a six-point lead from the first leg, the Riders then comprehensively beat their opponents 104-77 to book a place in this year’s BBL Cup Final.
“With the two legged games you get the opportunity to look back on the first game and have a week of practise. Our guys made the most of this and did a really good job throughout that week.”
“On Saturday, as the game went on, it was clear to see the focus and hard work they had shown throughout the week pay off; we started to take real control and never looked as if we were going to let up.”
Having tasted success in the BBL Cup Final last year, Paternostro is now eagerly anticipating this year’s showdown, which could see the Riders face either the Newcastle Eagles or Sheffield Sharks.
“We’re ecstatic to be in the final, it’s a great event” Coach Paternostro
“It’s very exciting times for all of us; fans, players and coaches. We’re ecstatic to be in the final, it’s a great event that the BBL promotes very well every year and there was an incredible atmosphere there last year so I know all the guys are really looking forward to it.”
“It’s interesting when you look at the other two teams remaining. Both have had a very good starts to the year and both were teams that made it to a final last year. Both teams have experience and talent so it will be a great match up whoever we end up facing.”
The BBL Cup Final, which will take place in Birmingham on January 12th at the National Indoor Arena, will be the Riders’ fifth consecutive final, an achievement that Paternostro is very proud of:
“To make five straight finals is fantastic. They have all been achieved with three different teams and it has been nice as a coach to see each team have their own styles and identity whilst still achieving such great things.”
