Leicester Riders head coach Rob Paternostro has revealed that the feeling of retaining the BBL Cup ‘just gets better and better’.
Riders successfully defended their Cup crown in front of a 9,000-strong crowd at Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena; following a thrilling final four minutes which saw Leicester beat Newcastle Eagles 72-69.
“I’m so proud of our guys” – Rob Paternostro
Drew Sullivan’s 11 points in a row rescued Riders from a 12-point deficit midway through the fourth quarter, which was followed by Jorge Calvo’s clutch three-pointer and ice-cool composure from Jay Couisnard at the foul line to deliver one of the most thrilling finales in BBL Cup Final history.
Scenes of jubilation ensued after the game’s final buzzer, with Paternostro falling to his knees in celebration.
“It keeps feeling better and better as the moments go by,” reviewed Rob following the game.
“I’m so proud of our guys and we’re all so happy to win a game like that, against a very good opponent and a game that was played in a highly-competitive manner.
“Last year’s success was remarkable,” he added.
“But this was a new team here; a different team. Yes, there are players that were involved last year and players that had won last year, but this is a new group. I think that winning on Sunday was great, not only for the guys that were new to the group, but the guys that were here before, because whenever you can repeat and win back-to-back titles like we’ve now done with the Cup, it’s very special.”
Riders return to BBL Championship action this weekend, taking on London Lions at the John Sandford Sports Centre on Saturday evening (18th January 2014, 7:30pm tip-off).
