BBL Cup Final Most Valuable Player, Drew Sullivan, has been named in the BBL Team of the Week.
The Great Britain captain turned in a truly inspirational performance in the final four minutes of Sunday’s Cup Final against former club Newcastle Eagles, which saw Leicester Riders come from behind to win their second consecutive BBL Cup title.
Sullivan’s 11 straight points for the Riders in the fourth quarter took Rob Paternostro’s side within touching distance of opponents Newcastle, who had their noses in front for the majority of the contest, before Jorge Calvo’s huge three-pointer gave the Riders the lead for the first time since the opening quarter of the game.
On the opposite end of the floor, Sullivan’s immense strength on defence helped ensure that Leicester were always in the contest, before turning in his magnificent offensive showing in the dying minutes. Finishing the game with a double-double, sinking 16 points and pulling down 10 rebounds, it’s perhaps no surprise that Drew’s name is among the list of players recognised for a stand-out week.
Jorge Calvo’s stunning performance at point has also earned him recognition in the select listing, although Riders’ number 9 is listed among the names on the team’s ‘bench’. In addition to his sensational three-pointer to give Riders the all-important lead in the fourth quarter, Calvo sank 10 points, grabbed two rebounds and an assist; however, his role in dictating plays in Riders’ incredible win goes beyond the game’s box score.
