Leicester Riders star forward John Fraley is a major injury doubt, after suffering a severe knee injury in the final minute of Rider’s win over Durham Wildcats on Sunday.
Fraley has been one of the stars of the BBL so far this season, featuring twice already in the BBL Team of the Week. He slipped off the ball at Durham, just as Riders wrapped up the game, and was taken to hospital on his return to Leicester on Sunday evening as a precaution, after the knee swelled up enormously after the game.
Fraley had contributed 14 points and 14 rebounds in just 28 minutes against Durham.
The Jelson Homes DMU backed Riders Head Coach Rob Paternostro said, “John’s injury really put a downer on the team, after what was a very hard fought game. Everyone in the changing room was very sombre afterwards. It was a tough injury. Now we are in the hands of our physio Craig Mortimer at the Ashleigh clinic. Craig tells me, with treatment twice a day, John’s recover will be speeded up. But these injuries are tricky – and you really don’t know until the swelling goes down.”
The timing could not have been worse for the undefeated Riders. They travel on Friday night to top of the table Newcastle Eagles, who have won their opening 7 games of the new season, after completing a sweep of all 4 trophies in the BBL last season. The game is televised on Sky. Riders follow that up with a home game against Cheshire Jets on Saturday night at the John Sandford Centre.
“Yes, the timing is not great”, said Paternostro. “John has proved a one-off this season knocking out consistent performances, and giving us a big inside presence – but we just have to suck it up – and look to other guys to step up for us. The comforting news is we have a lot of guys contributing to the team right now.”
