It is the third time that Charnwood College Riders Girls have represented England in the World Schools Sports Championship, previously placing third in 3×3 in Tallinn, Estonia in 2016 and also competing in 5v5 in Croatia last summer. The boys made their first appearance for England this summer.

The Charnwood College Riders Girls team was comprised of Holly Winterburn, Lauren Saa, Megan Jones and Imogen Cook whilst Hosana Kitenge, Blaize Sagna, Liam Johnson and Greg Durand made up the Charnwood College Riders Boys roster.

England’s Girls started the competition well, progressing through the group phase with a 5-0 record before dispatching China in the Quarter-Finals by a single point. Chinese Taipei were tough competition in the Semi-Final before facing hosts Serbia in the Final. A strong defensive performance from all players as well as great shooting from range saw the team claim the Gold medal.

Head Coach of the Women’s team Krumesh Patel was proud of the team’s performance.

“Incredible achievement for the girls and our programme to win the Gold medal here in Serbia, it is something they can be extremely proud of. They really locked in to what was asked of them and made their defensive presence felt on the whole competition.

“It was a well ran competition by the ISF and a great spectacle to have all teams from around the world in the same place. Serbia did an awesome job of the whole event as hosts of the competition to provide the players with an excellent experience.”

Holly Winterburn was named MVP of the Tournament having led England throughout the event coming up with game changing defensive plays and some huge shots.

The England Boys progress through the group phase with a 4-2 record before falling to France in the Semi-Final. In the third place game Charnwood needed a clutch three from guard Blaize Sagna to force overtime in which they were able to seal victory and the Bronze medal.

Will Maynard was pleased with the bronze medal finish for the boys first appearance at such an event.

“To finish third out of 27 team is a phenomenal achievement for everyone involved. The majority of the boys have never had an opportunity like this, and I couldn’t be prouder of how they have responded in a hostile environment here in Belgrade.

“We have all have made enjoyable memories and we will take what we have learnt and experienced back to England ahead of next season. I’m massively looking forward to more competitions and experiences like this one in the future for our programme.”
