Charnwood College who took victory in an overtime thriller, 74-81, over visiting side Preston College on Thursday afternoon to book their place in the Elite 8 of the EABL Playoffs.
Charnwood College managed to survive and advance after trailing most of the game against a very tough Preston team. It was Preston who came out the blocks early, taking the game out to a 10 point lead during the first quarter.
However, Charnwood did not allow it to get any more than that as they started chipping away. Charnwood did enough to remain in striking distance. Although everytime they managed to get the game down to a one possession scoreline, it was Preston who made the plays to stay infront and keep re-extending their lead. Preston went into the halftime break up 3.
The second half was nip and tuck the whole way. Both teams were going blow for blow until it was Charnwood who made their run in the fourth and took the lead for the first time with 6 minutes to go in regulation time.
Down the stretch big plays were made by both teams, but it was Charnwood who had the opportunity to win the game in regulation with a total of three missed attempts on the last possession and the game went into overtime all tied 66-66.
Infront of a great, and very loud home crowd, it was Charnwood who made the first blow in overtime opening up the 5 minute period with a 5-0 run.
Down the stretch numerous players made cluth plays on both teams. But it was Emanuel Burton who was the standout performer in OT hitting the dagger three point shot to seal the deal for Charnwood. He was accompanied by his teammates Josh McSwiggan, Andre Arissol and Timothy Fava who also managed to find the bottom of the net in big moments.
Yet again, Charnwood’s scoring was very shared. A total of five players made it into double figures. Andre Arissol (10), Timothy Fava (12), Emanuel Burton (13) and 4 assists, Jamie Percival (14) and were lead by Josh McSwiggan with 15 points and one rebound shy of a double double, 9 rebounds.
Charnwood will now advance onto the Elite 8 and travel to face the defending champions Harris Academy on Wednesday 7th May, 4:30pm Tip Off.
