Calvo – “The League is Stronger”

Last weekend, Leicester Riders once again showed their resilience, making important plays down the stretch that assured an 11-point win over an impressive Cheshire Phoenix team in front of a packed John Sandford Sports Centre.

It’s something that Riders have done consistently this season, in a league that – in the opinion of Spanish guard Jorge Calvo – is stronger than it was last year.

“I think that the league is better this year,” Jorge admitted following last weekend’s final buzzer.

“I believe that it is stronger in many ways. Last year, there were perhaps four teams that possessed a strong roster. This year, there are a few more teams with that kind of strength. I think we’ll see that things will be very interesting at the end of the season.

“Last year, we were strong of defence and we won almost everything, so I’m not surprised that teams appear to be focusing on that more,” he added. “However, despite that, I still feel that we have the strongest defensive team in the league.”

Calvo has once again shown his importance to the Riders, orchestrating key plays in vital periods of the game.

“We are playing good basketball,” said Calvo.

“I think that we’re improving week by week, but we’re just doing what Rob says and I think that we’re doing it better in every game. I’m really enjoying it this season.

“Like last year, I’m happy to play 20, 30 or 40 minutes – I just want to play. We have the deepest team in the league and if you look at our bench, we have players that could make the starting five in most teams.”

Dedicated to the Riders’ cause, fans will also have seen Jorge sporting stylish facial hair – another demonstration of his commitment to the team.

“It’s for Movember,” explained Jorge.

“Barry Lamble is doing it as well and we both did it last year. A lot of people were very generous and donated money for it, all going towards men’s health charities. It was an easy decision to do it again this year and it’s for a fantastic cause. I’ve tried to go for something different with my facial hair though!”

Riders are back in action at the John Sandford Sports Centre on Saturday night (16th November, 7:30pm tip-off), where they take on Worcester Wolves in the BBL Championship.
