The Academy Finals Day, featuring the Elite Academy Basketball League (EABL), Women’s Elite Academy Basketball League (WEABL) and Academy Basketball League (ABL) national championship finals will be played at the new Leicester Community Sports (LCS) Arena on Wednesday March 23.

The competitions have moved away from the traditional Final Four format to allow teams adequate rest and preparation for the showcase event with the intention it will lead to a higher quality performance from both sides on the floor.

Following feedback from teams for the later stages of the competition to not clash with the exam period, as well as a desire for a reduction in gaps between games to keep teams sharp, the Finals day has been moved to March instead of May as in previous years. This has resulted in a more condensed regular season, with the regular season ending at the end of February and playoffs taking place throughout March.

Additionally, the Finals day will incorporate an exit and progression event for all players and teams across the league, with a number of top universities from across the country exhibiting to show their offerings, both from an education and basketball standpoint.

“‘Basketball England are excited to be hosting the 2015-16 Elite Leagues Finals at Leicester Riders fantastic new 2500 seat custom built facility,” Basketball England’s Charlie Ford said.

“The event marks the end of the inaugural ABL & WEABL seasons and an exciting EABL season that through our partnership with Krossover has continued to set the standard for educationally based basketball competitions in the country.”

Leicester Riders General Manager Russell Levenston commented:

“The Riders organisation is really excited to be involved in the third year of the academy leagues finals. We always planned for the arena to allow for more basketball activity from grass roots to elite so for us to be hosting the elite young players in the country is very excited so early following the opening. It is also great that Riders fans will have an opportunity to see the top male and female players of the next generation throughout the day.”
