Leicester Riders grabbed a big overtime win against EuroChallenge side Okapi Aalstar of the Ethias League in Belgium.

Okapi Aalstar, who finished second in the Ethias League entered the game shooting the ball very well however Riders found success early through Tyler Bernardini’s hot hand and big inside presence of Rashad Hassan and Pavol Losonsky.

At the half the Riders continues to lead the visiting side and the hot shooting from both teams continued as Riders found a little success by switching defences throughout the half.

Great Britain’s Jamell Anderson continued to disrupt the Okapi offence with his length whilst pulling down eight rebounds in the game. Rashad Hassan added eight boards of his own as the Riders out rebounded Okapi, 46-30.

Down the stretch Riders forward Pavol Losonsky went to line to hold his nerve and put the Riders ahead before continued big plays from Braun to put Okapi ahead by two points.

Riders Captain Barry Lamble knocked down the baseline jump shot off the Neil Watson assist to tie the game to force overtime.

In overtime the Riders aggressive fast paced play allowed them to open a lead and take victory again the visiting Okapi side.

Head Coach Rob Paternostro was pleased with the performances over the weekend and happy to pick up the overtime win.

“It was a good weekend, good basketball here at Loughborough University. Both teams we played were excellent teams with a lot of talent but today was great because we got to win a tight game down the stretch.

When you are in an overtime game with a new group you wonder who is going to step up to make the big plays and I thought the guys all did. It was very satisfying to come away with the win.”

The Leicester Riders open the BBL regular season on September 27th against Manchester Giants tipping at 7.30pm.
