Three, is the magic number for Reiss Haggith
By Keith Firmin (@keithfirmin)
Reiss Haggith, son of BBC Sports Unsung Hero of 2012 Lance Haggith, is loved by the Leicester Riders faithful. So much so that towards the end of the 2011/12 campaign the fans would chant for Reiss to enter the game just to get their fill of Haggith.
And in return for their passionate support, the youngest member of the Riders canned some long range bombs. In fact, the Cambridge born Haggith's main weapon all season was the three, a shot he hit late in the fourth on a couple of occasions. Completely taking the scoreline and his shots out of context, the fact that Haggith made threes in the last 75 seconds of games make him clutch. Fact.
Haggith, though, prefers to point elsewhere for his personal highlight of the season: His first professional points - a two point field goal in a 96-58 win over the London Leopards back in November.
Haggith is ticking some important boxes when it comes to being a fan favourite: He's already got the solid fanbase and he has a signature move (the unique form on his three point shots only adds to it), so what next?
Red to Green Therapy NLP practitioner, Ken Hancott, a man who spent 2012 working closely with the Riders during the second half of the season, stated that Haggith's confidence took an upward turn as the year went on, a product of the Hypnotherapists work with the #11 but also as a result of Haggith spending a considerable amount of time during games sitting next to BBL veteran Yorick Williams, a player Haggith clearly has a lot of respect for.
“He's brilliant,” said Haggith when asked about the regular conversations Williams was seen to have with Reiss Haggith and fellow young gun, Connor Washington on the bench. “Sometimes you get players who have a lot of expertise who don't want to share it, whereas he's (Yorick) brilliant.
“He looks after us young guys and tells us everything he knows and I've learnt loads from him.”
Reiss Haggith, at 19, already sounds like a pro and has shown glimpses of playing like a pro. By continuing to surround himself with the right people and listening to their advice, it's only a matter of time before he adds to his offensive arsenal and becomes a more complete pro too.
