Sullivan rides in for the Riders

Drew Sullivan has today re-signed with the Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders, becoming the third member of the record breaking 2011/12 Riders squad to commit to the team ahead of the 2012/13 campaign.

In Sullivan's first season with the Riders, the GB Captain helped the team enjoy arguably their most successful season ever, recording 22 league wins and reaching the BBL play-off Final.

Those achievements are something Sullivan, 32, aims to build on with the Riders:

“One of the the reasons I chose to return to Leicester was the chance to continue something that was started last season,” said Sullivan. “We came extremely close to winning silverware, so returning to the club offers me the opportunity to achieve that goal.

“Another reason and probably the biggest reason why I have returned to the Riders is the relationship that I've developed with (General Manager) Russell Levenston.

“We've become really good friends and he's also looked after my interests on and off the court. So when the opportunity was presented that we could continue to work with each other it made a lot of sense.”

Sullivan is one of the most domestically decorated players in the BBL and with his impending attendance at this Summer's London Olympics, he is sure to bring a wealth of experience to the Riders, something he acknowledges himself:

A crazy statistic is that Drew Sullivan on last years team, had more winners medals than our whole team put together GB Captain replied. “As a team, though, we played in a number of games that had a lot of meaning last season: Semi finals over two legs, an important league game or the play-off finals and all of those games carried a huge amount of experience for most of our guys. So having been exposed to those situations, hopefully we can now build upon what we've learnt.

Heading into the off-season, securing Sullivan's signature to the club for a second year, was high on the list of 'Things to do' for Head Coach, Rob Paternostro:

“We made it pretty clear to Drew at the end of last season that we were interested in having him back here with us,” explained Paternostro. “Last season, he (Sullivan) was instrumental in everything we did, both on offense and defence. He's a guy who has a high basketball, is athletically gifted but most importantly, is a competitor and a winner.”
