Hoops 4 Health

 

 

 

Stage One - Road Shows

 
This initial stage of the programme tackles health issues in an entertaining and interactive
manner, working with professional basketball players from a BBL Basketball Club. Children
look up to these role models in more ways than one, as sessions captivate pupils. The
messages will delivered will really hit home!
The sessions take place in the school hall and focus on:
 

Healthy Eating, No Smoking, Fitness, Basketball Coaching

 

Hoops for Health - Basketball Station

 
This station is a basic Introduction to the sport of
basketball. After the session participants are made
aware of opportunities to continue to play basketball
outside of school hours. The player leads a station on
the basic skills of basketball, including:
Over head pass, Bounce pass, Chest pass, Dribbling the
basketball, Shooting the basketball Team games
 

Hoops 4 Health - Healthy Eating Station

 
The road shows focus on the following healthy eating
issues:
 
• Enjoy your food and eat a variety of different
foods.
• Eat the right amount to be a healthy weight.
• Eat plenty of food rich in starch and fibre.
• Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables.
• Don't eat too much fat.
• Don't eat sugary foods too often.
• Look after the vitamins and minerals in your food.
• Take plenty of exercise/be active.
 

Hoops 4 Health - Smoking Cessation Station

 
The player leading the station provides the children
with facts & figures about smoking. They must retain
the information as it will be necessary at the end the
station. Examples include: -
• One out of ten 11 to 15 years olds are regular smokers.
• Children who take up smoking are more likely to have parents who smoke.
• Children may take up smoking for many reasons: peer pressure, appearing ‘cool’
• Smoking cigarettes may also change the way you look.
• It is estimated that 450 children a day start smoking in Britain.
• Smokers are twice as likely to have a heart attack
All of the children are then directed through a five-minute exercise programme.
 

Hoops 4 Health - Fitness Station

 
The player leads a group discussion about the heart
asking the following questions:
• What is the main function of the heart?
• How big is the heart?
• Where is the heart located?
• When is the heart resting?
• When does it beat fast?
• How often should you exercise?
• What types of exercise should you do?
 

After the Road Show - Ongoing Development

 

Stage 2 - Basketball Coaching - 4 weeks

• Develop the group's core skills in basketball
• Further promote exercise and physical activity
• Identify interest in attendance at local clubs
To prepare teams for stage three of the programme
 

Stage 3 - Hoops for Health Tournaments

 

Stage 4 - Hoops for Health Tournament Final

The tournament culminates in a FINAL played at a BBL home game with the National Finals at the BBL Championship week-end. The schools of the participating teams will be given tickets for family and friends
 

Stage 5 - Hoops for Health Tournament Final

After receiving the Stage One Road Show presented by the players, a block of curricular / extra curricular coaching is given to the year group to:
Once schools have received their coaching block they are invited to place teams in to the Hoops4Health primary schools tournament. Schools have the opportunity to enter more than one team.
 
Tournaments are staged at local indoor facilities close to the primary schools geographically. These are also generally centres where clubs are based. The children are made aware that clubs can be attended if they are interested.
 
A National Final will be held from each participating BBL Club at the BBL Championship Week-end on May.
 
The teachers will be encouraged to continue what was learnt at the road show and the children to get more involved in sport. We will also encourage the school to arrange a trip to see a game.
